Background: Calcutta, capital of West Bengal, was back to normal on Sunday after a crippling 24-hour general strike on Saturday described by officials as 'the most peaceful ever'.

Only one death was reported as strong police and army units patrolled trouble spots during the strike throughout the state, where five to six killings a day are common.

The strike, which brought business, industrial activity and transport services to a near-standstill, was called by trade unions to back demands for higher pay and better working conditions.
