    A HIGH COURT IN BLANTYRE, MALAWI, ON FRIDAY (JUNE 14) SENTENCED EIGHT MEN TO DEATH FOR TREASON. JUDGEMENT WAS PRONOUNCED BY JUDGE SIR PETER WATKIN-WILLIAMS AFTER A FOUR-WEEK TRIAL.

    THE EIGHT MEN WERE ACCUSED OF BEING MEMBERS OF A REBEL BAND WHICH ENTERED MALAWI LAST YEAR TO DESPOSE AND POSSIBLY ASSASSINATE PRESIDENT HASTINGS KAMUZU BANDA. IT WAS ALLEGED THAT THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND BEEN TRAINED BY INSTRUCTORS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

    IN ADDITION TO THE JUDGE, THE CASE WAS HEARD BY THREE AFRICAN ASSESSORS, WHOSE OPINION WAS THAT THE MEN HAD BEEN PROVED TO HAVE COMMITTED TREASONABLE ACTS. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE ASSESSORS ARE OF AN ADVISORY NATURE AND ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BY THE COURT IN PASSING JUDGEMENT.

    THE CONVICTED MEN - GHIMA MWAKAWANGA, TOMANGO CHIDAWATI, ARRIS PHOMEYA, TOBIAS BONONGWE, JAMES MOYO, JACKSON MPWANTHI, RAPHAEL KAMANGA AND SUWEDI MASAMBA HAD PLEADED "NOT GUILTY". THEY HAVE 30 DAYS IN WHICH TO APPEAL AGAINST THE SENTENCE.
