    "Any revolution, any people fighting for its rights, must use both the military struggle and the political implements of struggle. And without both proceeding, no people I know of have achieved political independence. Now, the question is a question of emphasis. Without the military struggle we would not have achieved what we have -- definitely. I mean, after all, the Palestine question is 26 years old and there were resolutions every year, none of them like this one. And if we now stop at that resolution and sit on it, chances are we shall be forgotten in due course. We have not yet liberated one inch of our soil. We have achieved resolutions. We are grateful to them, yes. But those resolutions still have a lot to go before they become reality. And we have to maintain our struggle until these resolutions become reality."

    Background: Although the United Nations General Assembly on Friday reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to independent nationhood, the immediate reaction of Palestinians on the spot was that the armed struggle for statehood must continue.

    After the results of the voting -- the UN resolution was carried by 89 votes to eight with 47 abstentions -- the Palestine Liberation Organization officials at the United Nations called a news conference. And while they welcomed the resolution, they felt it still did not do enough to help the plight of the Palestinians.

    This was how PLO spokesman Nabil Shaath responded to Friday's voting:
    SYNOPSIS: The United Nations General Assembly on Friday reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to independent nationhood. But the immediate reaction of Palestinians on the spot was that their bloody armed struggle for statehood must continue. As soon as the results of the voting were known, the Palestine Liberation Organization called a news conference. Spokesman Nabil Shaath gave his reaction.
