  • Description

TWENTY-EIGHT GREEK ARMY OFFICERS TODAY (MONDAY) FACED A MILITARY COURT IN ATHENS. THEY ARE ACCUSED OF TREASON.

THE CHARGES AGAINST THE 28 ACCUSED WERE CONTAINED IN A 475 PAGE INDICTMENT READ TO THE COURT AT THE START OF THE TRIAL, DESCRIBED AS THE MOST SENSATIONAL IN GREECE SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

THE ACCUSED, WHO FACE A POSSIBLE DEATH SENTENCE, WERE CHARGED WITH FORMING A SECRET AND ILLEGAL ORGANISATION OF GREEK OFFICERS CALLED "ASPIDA" (THE SHIELD). ONE OF ASPIDA'S AIMS, THE INDICTMENT SAID, WAS TO OVERTHROW THE CONSTITUTIONAL REGIME AND ESTABLISH A TYPE OF MERITOCRACY -- RULE BY THE MOST WORTHY.

THE OFFICERS WERE ALSO ACCUSED TO TRYING TO GET GREECE TO QUIT THE ATLANTIC ALLIANCE AND JOIN THE NON-ALIGNED NATIONS. SOME OF THE ACCUSED WERE ALSO CHARGED WITH TAKING PART IN A PLAN TO KILL MAJOR MICHAEL ARNAOUTIS, SECRETARY OF KING CONSTANTINE.

A BARRAGE OF OBJECTIONS BY DEFENCE COUNSEL DELAYED THE OPENING OF THE TRIAL. THE OBJECTIONS, WHICH CHALLENGED THE COURT PRESIDENT, AND DEMANDED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CROWN PROSECUTOR, WERE OVERRULED.

ABOUT 400 WITNESSES WILL TESTIFY AT THE TRIAL WHICH IS EXPECTED TO LAST SEVERAL WEEKS. THEY INCLUDE FORMER CYPRIOT UNDERGROUND LEADER, GENERAL GEORGE GRIVAS, WHO WAS IN COURT, FORMER PRIME MINISTER GEORGE PAPANDREOU, AND FORMER MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE GAROUFALIAS, ALSO IN COURT.
