  • Description

The second of the seven America's Cup yacht races was won yesterday (Tuesday) by the Australian challenger "Gretel". She beat the New York Yacht Club defender "Weatherly", winner of the first race last Saturday, by 47 seconds on the 24-mile triangular course off Newport, Rhode Island. "Gretel" was the first challenger to win an America's Cup race in 28 years.

Film shows President Kennedy, his wife and their daughter Caroline going aboard the destroyer "Joseph P. Kennedy" to watch the event; the start of the race; and the two 12-metre sloops under way.

It was touch and go all the way - first the "Gretel" in front, then the "Weatherly", and finally the "Gretel" ahead early on the third leg. The Australians maintained their lead and skimmed across the finish line with 300 yards in hand. Seas were chippy at wind speeds of more than 20 knots.
