THE EVENING OF DEC. 11 WAS THE LAST DAY OF THE TANGANYIKA INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS PROGRAMME. IT WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY A GAY COLOURFUL PROCESSION OF FLOATS THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CAPITAL OF THE NEWLY INDEPENDENT AFRICAN NATION.

THOUSANDS OF TANGANYIKANS DANCED AND SANG THROUGH THE STREETS ALONGSIDE THE FLOATS - PROVIDED BY LOCAL FIRMS.

LATER THAT EVENING, THE ROYAL NAVAL CRAFT H.M.S. "BELFAST" AND H.M.S. "RHYL" LEFT DAR-ES-SALAAM HARBOUR. THEIR CREWS LINED THE DECKS AND SANG SONGS THAT ECHOED BACK ACROSS THE WATER TO PEOPLE LINING THE QUAYSIDE.
