Background: For British European Airway's 700 air-girls there's quite a battle on. All because B.E.A.'s chairman, Lord Douglas of Kirtleside ordered the girls to shorten their skirts to a couple of inches or so below the knee. It was Lady Douglas who put the idea in her husband's mind. For other hostesses on other airlines the new length is nothing new. They've kept up as the fashion changed -and very nice too. (BRING UP). If the hosties don't all like short skirts what about the other girls? These usherettes are with 'em. They prefer the old length. (BRING UP). Perhaps the nurses might like a change - even if it did send temperatures soaring. One thing's certain though. Bus conductresses don't want skirts at all in the winter. Long or short. To many of the B.E.A. girls it's all a matter of principle. They think they should say whether those inches should stay on - or come off. Well, what do you think? This pretty French hostess has her uniform designed in Paris and she thinks it's the world's smartest. It's not extreme it's in between. But Paris's extreme for 1958 took skirts right up to the knee. Now nobody wants them too short (BRING UP) or do they? (BRING UP).
