  • Description

Tanzania has been celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the Angolan armed struggle for national liberation through the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola -- the MPLA. The celebrations took place on Wednesday (4 February) in the Tanu Youth League headquarters in Dar Es Salaam.

Representatives of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, headed by Ndugu Agusto, watched a display of tribal dancing before being presented with a cheque for 876,093 Tanzanian shillings (GBP53,096 sterling). At the moment the Soviet backed MPLA appear to be winning the civil war against the western-backed UNITA -- the National Union for the Total Liberation of Angola and FNLA -- the National Front for the Liberation of Angola.

The money was collected by Tanzanian youth movements and was donated to further "the liberation struggle in Angola". The largest contributor was the Tanzanian People's Defence Forces, who also pledged their support to fight with the MPLA until final victory.

In his speech Ndugu Agusto said; "Today the revolutionary struggle of the Angolan people is liquidating the strength of colonialism, thanks to the formation of a vast popular liberation movement, the MPLA, and its political line of struggle against colonialism, imperialism and all forme of exploitation of man by man."
Ndugu Agusto went on to criticise the idea of a government of National Unity in Angola -- saying that this was being promoted by countries who still wish to exploit Angola: "Today the Angolan people are united", he said, "They are united in chasing out all foreigners who desire this so-called 'unity' in our country."
