  • Description

General Yakubu Gowon, head of Nigeria's Federal Military Government, said on Wednesday(August 8) that he believed properly-implemented sanctions would bring down the breakaway Rhodesian regime sooner or later.

General Gowon, who is in Ottawa, Canada for the Common-wealth summit, told a press conference that stronger sanctions were all that could be depended on since no country would use force. However the General thought guerrilla activities in the area should be stepped up.

He said 'Nibmar' standing for no independence before majority rule - was the only solution that would work in the long run for Rhodesia. If bloodshed came to Southern Africa it would spread to the whole world, so the General wanted the Untied nations to take Namibia (South West Africa) back from South Africa.

General Gowon did not want to interfere in the issue of President Amin's expulsion of 40,000 Ugandan Asians. It was an internal matter and President Amin must have found it the only way to solve his problems.

The General also confirmed Nigeria's recognition of Bangladesh and expressed the hope that Bangladesh and pakistan would solve their differences.
