    FROM A FIELD OF 86, AUSTRIA'S WORLD CHAMPION EGON ZIMMERMANN WON IN I MIN. 19.83 SECS.; SECOND CAME KARL SCHRANZ 1:20.8; WITH LUDWIG LEITLER, OF WEST GERMANY, THIRD IN 1:21.31. AMONG THE COMPETITORS DISQUALIFIED FOR MISSING A GATE WAS THE AGA KHAN, REPRESENTING IRAN.

    CONDITIONS WERE VERY BAD WITH THE 1,072 YARDS (980 METRES) COURSE WITH 51 GATES SHROUDED IN THICK MIST. A THIN LAYER OF SNOW HAD MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD THE DOWNHILL EVENT FOR THE 34TH. LAUBERHORN INTERNATIONAL SKI RACE, SO THIS GIANT SLALOM, NOT COUNTING TOWARDS THE COMBINED RESULTS WAS HELD. DUE TO THE POOR CONDITIONS, THE COURSE WAS LAID BUT HIGHER UP THE MOUNTAIN-SIDE, AND LOW CLOUD MADE MATTERS WORSE.
