Background: For the first time in two thousand five hundred years, the continents of Europe and Asia are linked together following the opening of the Bosphorous Bridge by the President of Turkey, Mr. Fahri Koruturk on Tuesday (October 30th). The President cut the red and white tape on the Asia side of the fast-flowing Bosphorous then, accompanied by his Cabinet Ministers, walked across the bridge to the European continent.

Costing 15 million pounds sterling (37 millions U.S.) the one thousand, one hundred yard (metres) bridge was designed by a British team and built by an Anglo-German consortium. Its construction took three-and-a-quarter years. More than a quarter of a million jubilant Turks gathered on the shores of the Bosphorous for the opening, which also marked Turkey's 50th anniversary as a Republic. Man has talked of a bridge across the Bosphorous since 500 B.C. when the Persian king, Dari???, built a flimsy bridge of boats across the straits. The Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, tried unsuccessfully to persuade the Turks to build a bridge across in 1503.

With a length of almost three quarters of a mile (one km.) the bridge is the fourth largest suspension bridge in the world and the largest outside the United States. It's also high enough for Soviet worships to sail under.
