Background: General Gursel and members of his Provisional Government and of the National Union Committee saw Turkey beat Scotland 4-2 in an international soccer match at Ankara, June 8. Afterwards, General Gursel met both teams and told Scotland's captain, Bobby Evans. "You gave us a fine game".

Turkey dominated the opening stages, and it was no surprise when they went ahead in the eighth minute through centre-forward Metin. Four minutes later Scotland's left-back Caldow equalised with a penalty, but at half-time Turkey were leading 3-1 with further goals from outside-right Lefter.

Outside-left Senor increased the Turkish lead 4-1 in the second half, before centre-forward Young reduced Scotland's arrears to 4-2.

Scotland's defeat was a surprise, the climax to a disappointing tour. They lost 4-1 in Vienna to Austria, and drew 3-3 with Hungary in Budapest, after leading 3-1 midway through the second half.
