Background: In the North Pacific, hopes were fading on Friday (28 December) for the twenty eight men believed trapped in the hull of a Panamanian freighter. The freighter, the Lee Yang Zin, ran aground and capsized off Kendrick Island, forty miles south west of the Alaskan port of Ketchican on Thursday (27 December).

SYNOPSIS: Tugs and navy diving teams were standing by Friday (28 December) close to the overturned oil carrier. But heavy seas off the rocky Alaskan coast had prevented any rescue attempts by Friday night (28 December). Only two bodies had been and been recovered and it was considered unlikely that the rest of the Taiwanese crew including the captain had survived. Diving experts on the scene said that because of the icy seas and the storms the longer it took to reach the hull the less chance there was of finding anyone alive.
