INTRODUCTION: Gaullist Party leader, Jacques Chirac looked st to win the post of Mayor of Paris as voters in France went to the polls on Sunday (20 March).

SYNOPSIS: It was the second round of the Municipal elections. The Socialist-Communist alliance which wrested 32 towns from Government majority candidates in the previous Sunday's (13 March) first poll were expected to consolidate their advances in the run-off elections on 20th March.

The Interior Ministry said the number of voters registering their votes at midday on the 20th was two percent up on the previous week. Monsieur Chirac - a former Prime Minister - scored an initial victory in the first poll. He's reported to have made a bargain with the main opponent he defeated - the Minister for Industry, Monsieur Michel D'Ornano - a personal choice of President Giscard D'Estaing. This was to avoid a split in the anti-left vote for seats on the new City Council.

The post of mayor is a position of power second only to that of the Prime Minister.
