  • Description

A NEW BRIDGE ACROSS THE RIVER SHIRE (PRONOUNCED SHIREE) HAS BEEN OPENED BY PRESIDENT BANDA OF MALAWI.

THE BRIDGE REPLACES AN OLD FERRY SERVICE AND IMPROVES TREMENDOUSLY THE ROUTE SOUTH TO THE SUCOMA SUGAR PLANTATIONS, A GAME RESERVE AND THE WHOLE OF THE LOWER SHIRE AREA.

THE BRIDGE IS ONE OF SEVERAL WHICH WILL REPLACE RIVER FERRIES IN MOST PARTS OF MALAWI. THE GO HEAD TO REPLACE FERRIES FOLLOWED THE SINKING IN 1965 OF A BOAT NEAR LIWONDE WHEN A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WERE DROWNED. IT'S TAKEN THREE YEARS TO BUILD THE NEW BRIDGE AND THE COST WAS ABOUT GBP400,000 STERLING. IT'S 24 FEET (7 METRES) WIDE AND 640 FEET (ABOUT 200 METRES) LONG. AND IN CASE OF SWOLLEN RIVERS THE BRIDGE RISES 51 FEET (ABOUT 15???? METRES) ABOVE THE RIVER BED.

DURING THE OPENING CEREMONY PRESIDENT BANDA PUBLICLY THANKED SOUTH AFRICA FOR WHAT HE TERMED "ITS MOST GENEROUS LOAN" OF EIGHT MILLION RAND (4.7 MILLION STERLING) FOR THE FIRST PHASE OF MALAWI'S NEW CAPITAL AT LILONGWE. WORK IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN LATER THIS MONTH (MAY). LILONGWE LIES ON THE MAIN AIR ROUTES BETWEEN KENYA AND SOUTH AFRICA AND BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND TANZANIA. MALAWI IS THE FIRST INDEPENDENCE BLACK AFRICAN STATE TO EXCHANGE ENVOYS WITH SOUTH AFRICA.
