  • Description

A 28-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN, DAVID SMITH, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) MADE THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL SWIM ACROSS THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR FROM THE NORTH AFRICAN COAST TO GIBRALTAR.

SEVERAL SWIMMERS HAVE CROSSED THE STRAITS FROM THE SPANISH COAST TO THE MOROCCAN SIDE, BUT NO ONE HAD SUCCEEDED IN MAKING THE NORTHWARDS CROSSING.

SMITH, WHO COMES FROM SAN FRANCISCO, SET OUT FROM THE SPANISH ENCLAVE OF CERES CEUTA ON THE NORTH AFRICAN COAST. THIRTY MILES (50 KILOMETRES) TO THE NORTH LAY THE BAY OF GIBRALTAR, ACROSS THE STRONG CURRENTS THAT SWEEP INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN FROM THE ATLANTIC. AND ACROSS THE PATH OF HUNTING SHARKS.

ONCE HE WAS CLEAR OF THE COAST AND INTO DEEPER WATERS, SMITH ENTERED A PROTECTIVE CAGE TOWED BY A LAUNCH AND STRUCK OUT ON THE LONG HARD SWIM. HE WAS SAFE INSIDE THE CAGE, AND THE ONLY CURIOUS VISITORS WERE A GROUP OF FRIENDLY PORPOISES.

EIGHT AND THREE QUARTER HOURS LATER HE CAME ASHORE AT CAMP BAY, THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR LOOMING IN THE BACKGROUND. THERE WAS A BIG WELCOME WAITING FOR HIM ... BUT FOR SMITH THE BEST PART OF IT WAS PERHAPS THE RELIEF OF COLLAPSING EXHAUSTED ONTO HARD EARTH.
