Background: Five hundred people, both Africans and Europeans, attended the inaugural congress of the National Democratic Party, held during weekend Oct 29/30 in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. The congress should have taken place two weeks earlier at Gwelo, but the N.D.P. could not meet a GBP100,000 indemnity against riots and damage, laid down by the Civil Commissioner.
Congress was held in Goodwill Centre, a recreation hall for Africans in the European area....and was without incident. It was the first meeting of the N.D.P. not attended by police.
Officials of the Party were on the platform, and delegates heard speeches by Robert Mugabe, Congress chairman; Leopold Takawire, Party President; and party Secretary-General, Enos Nkala.
Takawire called for unity among African people and attacked the Government for trying to destroy the party by arrests, shootings and intimidation. The Government wanted to destroy a legitimate opposition.
The N.D.P. was bent on crushing white supremacy, not the white man, he said. Whites who supported N.D.P. were not stooges of the Africans, but stooges of democracy, fair play and Christianity.
According to N.D.P. principles set down in the Congress programme, it will "work with other democratic movements in Africa and other continents with a view to abolishing colonialism, tribalism, racialism and all forms of national and racial oppression and economic inequality among nations, races and peoples; and to promote world peace."
