Background: TURIN, ITALY, AND SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN

European Cup soccer, and Hamburg of West Germany drew with home team Real Sociedad in San Sebastian on April 6 in the first leg of their semi-final. In an unspectacular game, with few scoring chances, Hamburg (playing in red) took the lead in the 13th minute. Jimmy Hartwig broke clear on the right flank before crossing to Wolfgang Rolff, who deftly headed past Reul's international goalkeeper, Luis Arconada. There was no further scoring until late in the second half. Real were awarded a corner, defender Gajate tapped the ball under the German keeper from close range off Lopez Ufarte's cross. The second leg was due to be played in two weeks' time.

In Turin, home team Juventus (blue and white stripes) defeated Widzew Lodz of Poland. Roared on by the 63,000 crowd, the Italians scored in the seventh minute, World Cup midfielder Macro Tardelli blasting a shot from the edge of the box. In the second half, Polish player Zbigniew Boniek, who left Widzew Lodz for Juventus at the end of last season, had two fine shots, which prompted equally-fine saves from Lodz goalkeeper, Mlynarczyk. Minute later Boniek made a solo run from deep in his own half, dribbling past several defenders to set up the second goal. He passed to Paolo Rossi, took the return pass shot for goal. Mlynarczyk deflected the ball only to Roberto Battega, who tapped it over line from close range.
