Background: Austrian Foreign Minister Dr. Rudolf Kirchschlaeger held his first meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr Murad Ghaleb, in Cairo on Wednesday (10 May). Dr Kirchschlaeger is on a five-day official visit to Egypt.
During Wednesday's meeting at the Foreign Ministry, Dr Ghaleb officially welcomed Dr Kirchschlaeger, who had arrived in Cairo on Tuesday (9 May).
During his visit, Dr Kirchschlaeger will be discussing the Middle East crisis with Egyptian leaders. And although talks with President Anwar Sadat are not on his official schedule, it's expected that the Austrian Foreign Minister will meet the Egyptian leader.
Dr. Kirchschlaeger had visited Israel a week before coming to Egypt, and had discussed the Middle East situation with the country's leaders.
Austria hasn't been formally approached by either Egypt or Israel to mediate in the Middle East, but Viennese Foreign Office spokesman indicated that Dr Kirchschlaeger's talks in Israel are likely to be discussed during his stay in Cairo.
The Austrian Foreign Minister is due to sign an Austrian--Egyptian cultural agreement during his visit and will tour Luxor and Aswan in Upper Egypt as well.
SYNOPSIS: Austrian Foreign Minister Rudolf Kirchschlaeger went to the Foreign Ministry in Cairo on Wednesday for talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr Murad Ghaleb. Dr Kirchschlaeger had arrived in the Egyptian capital the day before and Wednesday marked his first session of talks with Dr. Chaleb. The Austrian Foreign Minister is making a five-day official visit to Egypt for talks on the Middle East crisis. A week before, he'd been in Israel for talks on the Middle East there.
Although Dr Kirchschlaeger isn't scheduled to meet President Sadat, it's expected he will have talks with the Egyptian leader. The Austrian Foreign Minister will also be signing an Austrian-Egyptian cultural agreement during his visit, and will do some touring as well.
