Background: Twelve Italian missionaries were expelled from Uganda yesterday (2 July). The twelve, all members of the Verona Fathers, told newsmen in Nairobi that they had been given no reasons for their sudden expulsion.

The missionaries had been working in northern Uganda, building hospitals, running clinics and undertaking other community projects, as well as running their missions. Some had been in Uganda for as long as 40 years. Plain clothes policemen had ordered their deportation, they told newsmen. They were escorted to Kampala and put on a plane for Nairobi. Four other missionaries, currently in Italy, were banned from returning to Uganda. Coverage includes brief interviews by Visnews reporter Paul Toulmin-Rothe with three of the missionaries--Father Paulo of Lucca and Father Aristo Demo of Belluno, who both speak in English, and Father Manfroni from Gubbio, who speaks in Italian:
