  • Description

President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, in Britain as the leader of a Ministerial Mission from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which is touring Europe and the United States to present its case against the sale of arms to South Africa, conferred in London on Saturday (October 17) with former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Shadow Foreign Secretary Denis Healey.

On Friday (October 16) President Kaunda held talks with British Prime Minister Edward Heath.

Mr. Wilson and Mr. Healey went to the Zambian leader's London hotel for what was described as a "friendly exchange of views".

President Kaunda said later that Mr. Wilson and Mr. Healey were old friends of his and that they had discussed questions of policy in the Commonwealth, the OAU, non-alignment and the United Nations.

Informed sources said that Mr. Wilson and Mr. Healey reiterated their Party's known opposition to any resumption of arms sales to South Africa. It is understood they also assured the Zambian President that a Labour Government would not honour any contracts on South African arms sales made by a Conservative Government.

Earlier President Kaunda had appealed to the British Government to take time before deciding whether to resume limited arms sales to South Africa.

This appeal followed his warning the previous day that Britain could be kicked out of the Commonwealth she founded if the arms sales were resumed.
