  • Description

The Japanese capital, Tokyo -- already short of fuel and electricity -- is now suffering its longest period without rain in recording history.

Sixty-four days without rain (up until Sunday, January 13), have caused the city's reservoirs to drop to dangerously low levels, created a serious fire hazard, and killed crops in Tokyo's western agricultural suburbs.

The Tokyo Fire Department has reported a sharp increase in the number of outbreaks of fire, and has issues a general fire warning. The Department has been using four helicopters to watch over the city, where most housing is still made of wood.

Reservoirs feeding Tokyo are down to 45 per cent of their capacity, and Metropolitan government officials have warned of water restrictions, should the levels fall below 40 per cent.

Market gardens in the western suburbs of Tokyo have also suffered, and vegetables have increased by more than 300 per cent in price since the dry spell began. the market gardens are not fed by irrigation systems, and the farmers have had to abandon their fields. Some have turned to importing vegetables from Korea and Taiwan.
