  • Description

Abdoulaye Maiga, Mali Federation representative in Paris, called on President de Gaulle at the Elysee Palace Aug 31 to deliver a message from Modibo Keita, his President. Substance of the message - Keita accepted President de Gaulle's invitation and would be in Paris Sept 2.

Negotiations between the two leaders may be awkward. Senegal - one of the two component areas of the Mali Federation - expelled Keita - a Sudanese - from the capital Dakar, and declared the ten day old Federation at an end. Senegal is pro-French, the Sudan under Keita less so.

If President de Gaulle can maintain the Federation he may be putting his supporters in West Africa under a leadership not too enthusiastic for the French Community. But if he allows the Federation to dissolve, it is possible that Keita will lean to alliance with Guinea, led by Sekou Toure, and will support the Algerian rebels.
