  • Description

President Giscard D'Estaing of France has urged his new government to cut bureaucratic red tape. He told the first meeting of the 22-member cabinet on Thursday (6 April) that its top priority must remain faster economic growth.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at Elysee Palace, the President's official residence in the heart of Paris.

The Cabinet is headed by Prime Minister Raymond Barre and contains fewer new names than some political observers expected.

Among those who retained their posts is the Health Minister, Madame Simone Veil, promoted to number three in the Administration.

Another member of the former government is Louis de Guiringaud, who kept his portfolio of Foreign Affairs.

Interior Minister Christian Bonnet and Defence Minister Yvon Bourges were also reappointed. M. Barre, who has acted as his own Finance Minister since becoming Prime Minister in August, 1976, split the job between two new portfolios economics and budgetary affairs. He said he would continue to take special interest in economic and financial policy.

President Giscard said that, after years of electioneering, which culminated in last month's general elections, France now faces three years without any major polls. "I hope, he said, "the government seizes this exceptional opportunity to attack in depth the real problems of our country."
