The Chinese leader Hua Guofeng who has been making the first ever visit by a Chinese Chairman to western Europe has told the West German Chancellor that a strong and prosperous Germany is in the interests of world peace. He made the statement in a half-hour discussion with Chancellor Schmidt after taking part in the first of a round of talks with ministerial delegations.
SYNOPSIS: Chairman Hua and Chancellor Schmidt held their first talks on the second day of the Chinese leader's visit to West Germany. Reuters News Agency says Mr. Hua's reception appeared to be deliberately low key in view of the delicate relations between Bonn and Moscow. For his part, Mr. Schmidt is reported to be anxious not to upset relations with the Soviet Union, and has made it plain that he will not be drawn into taking sides in Peking's quarrel with Moscow.
The first conference with ministerial delegations was afterwards reported to be friendly and businesslike. Mr. Hua says his four-nation European tour is aimed at making China better understood, strengthening friendships and helping promote world peace. He is also interested in gaining assistance for China's ambitious development plans. He will visit several high-technology industries.
Mr. Hua kept a luncheon appointment with President Karl Carstens. Later he was to make a statement which showed sympathy with the view that Germany should be re-unified. He said it was abnormal that Germany has been artificially divided, and the Chinese people understand fully how the German people feel in wishing to see their nation reunited. His statement drew a quick response from the official East German news agency, which said he supports 'German imperialism'.
