FLOODS -- WHICH ARE NOW SUBSIDING -- HAVE CAUSED ONE DEATH AND EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN SOUTHERN MALAWI. 3,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MADE HOMELESS, AND DAMAGE IN THE LOWER SHIRE VALLEY IS ESTIMATED AT 20,000 POUND STERLING.

AN AFRICAN LORRY DRIVER WAS KILLED LAST TUESDAY (3 FEBRUARY) WHEN HEAVY RAIN CAUSED A BRIDGE TO COLLAPSE ON A MAIN ROAD IN KASUPE, ABOUT 80 MILES (130 KMS) NORTH OF BLANTYRE.

ACCORDING TO A SPOKESMAN DOE MALAWI'S MINISTRY FOR AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES, THE DANGER HAS NOW RECEDED. THE GOVERNMENT IS ACTING JOINTLY WITH CHURCH ORGANISATIONS TO BRING RELIEF SUPPLIES TO THE STRICKEN AREAS.

PRESIDENT KAMUZU BANDAHAS SENT CONDOLENCES TO THE PEOPLE IN THE FLOODED DISTRICTS.
