Background: INTRODUCTION: The world's leading badminton players have gathered in London for the 1981 John Player All-England championships. Despite the range of tournaments now held the All-England is still the title the top players most want to win.

SYNOPSIS: These are the seventy-first All-England championships which began in 1899. One of the opening matches attracting the keenest attention was between Rudi Hartono of Indonesia, playing in a dark shirt and Flemming Delfs of Denmark. Their match emphasised the Europe versus Asia rend which has developed in recent badminton tournaments.

Hartono has already won the All-England eight times and is the present world champion. Delfs is the immediate-past world champion. Hartono quickly asserted his authority.

The Indonesians, with a majority of the top seedings are favoured to take the men's title but observers can't decide which one. Hartono gave notice he'll be a tough contender taking his firs set against the Dane 15-8.

Players from a record number of twenty three countries are competing for ten-and-a-half-thousand pounds Sterling in prize money.

Delfs was not seeded and was reported to have a leg injury. Soon the second, decisive set was going the way of the first.

The finals of the five titles being contested will be played on Sunday (29 March).

Rudi Hartono went on to beat Flemming Delfs 15-8, 15-4.
