    Twenty-five year old Stan Smith of the United States on Thursday (6 July) won his way through to the final of the 1972 Wimbledon tennis championships.

    Smith, who comes from South Carolina and is a corporal in the U.S.Army, boat Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia in the semi-final 3-6, 6-46-1, 7-5.

    It was not an easy match for the Number One Seed. Kodes took the initiative early to win the first set convincingly by six games to three. It wasn't until the middle of the second set that Smith began to unwind some of the powerful strokes that have placed himamong the world's leading tennis players.

    In the final on Saturday (8 July) Stan Smith who will play Ilie Nastase of Rumania who beat the Spanish left-hander Manuel Orantesin the semi-final.
