  • Description

The teenagers of Johannesburg gathered in thousands to greet "rock 'n roll" singer Cliff Richard when he arrived in the city on March 9th to begin his South African tour. Both Africans and Europeans joined in the welcome, described as the "most riotous" ever given to an entertainer in Johannesburg.

Members of the police, the flying squad and the traffic department had a hard job preventing teenage girls from getting inside Mr. Richard's hotel.

The star several times tried to address his enthusiastic fans, but on each occasion was interrupted by cries of "Sing, sing, sing".

Four girls fainted in the excitement and had to be dragged clear of the crowd.
