SYNOPSIS: The Race of Champions Formula One event at Brands Hatch last Sunday drew many of the world's best racing drivers, although it did not count towards the world championship. Making its debut was this Lotus, the world's first jet-engined car.

This is Graham Hill, world champion in 1962 and 1968. He recorded the fastest lap of the day at 110.03 mph in the new Brabham BT34. But his chances of victory ended when he was forced to retire with a broken valve spring after 36 laps.

The Lotus, the world's first jet-engined car, did not reach the high speeds expected of it. When its driver, the Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, retired with a collapsed rear suspension, he was lying in twelfth place.

Only seven of the original starters finished the race. The winner was the Swiss driver, Clay Regazzoni. His Farrier 312B was making its first outing, and won the event by 23 seconds. Regazzoni covered the 132.5 mile course with an average speed of 108.04 mph. Britain's Jackie Stewart was second, and John Surtees third.
