  • Description

Michael Abdul Malik--"Michael X"--the former Black Power leader, was flown to Trinidad from Guyana on Thursday (March 2) to face trial in the murder of Mrs. Gail Ann Benson and Joseph Skerritt. The 38-year-old Malik had been found hiding in coal pit on a Guyana plantation 60 miles (95 kilometres) from Georgetown, after a seven-day police hunt throughout the Caribbean following the discovery of the two bodies in a garden grave in his burnt-out Trinidad home.

With his hair and beard shaved off, Malik looked nothing like the bushy-haired man that police had been searching out. He looked tired and haggard and is reported to have been attempting to reach the Brazilian border on foot when arrested.

Yesterday (Friday), he appeared in Court and was formally charged with the murders and remanded for trial on March 14 in Arima--where the murder house is located. Five other men have also been charged for the murders--two of them still uncaptured. Police also believe there may have been other murders committed and are combing the island with troops and mine detectors in search of other bodies.

SYNOPSIS: Heavy police guards massed in Trinidad's Piarco Airport on Thursday, to await the arrival of the aircraft carrying former Black Power Leader Michael Abdul Malik-- Michael X-- from Guyana to be charged with murder.

Malik--with his bushy hair and beard shaved--looked tired and haggard. He had been found hiding in a coal pit on a Guyana plantation seven days after the bodies of Mrs. Gail Ann Benson and Joseph Skerritt were discovered in a garden grave o??? his burnt-out Trinidad home. He is said to have been trying to reach the Brazilian border on foot when arrested.

Army units with mine-detectors have joined police in combing the island of Trinidad, where they suspect more bodies may be hidden in what investigators are reportedly describing as either ritualistic killings in the Charles Manson style, or a violent cracking-up of a drug-smuggling ring. Five other men have also been charge din the murders--three of them already captured by police.

At Malik's former luxury home in Arima--near Port of Spain--police found books and political material said to be linked to revolutionary activities. Authorities are said to be anxious that all details of the case be made public, so as to quash any rumours that link local politicians with Malik and his associates.
