  • Description

The Tour of Britain Cycle race - by now most of the competitors will have arrived at Southend at the end of the second day's hard riding.

The eighty-four competitors were soon in the Midlands after yesterday morning's start from Blackpool. The hundred and twenty seven miles to Nottingham were considered to be fairly easy. Twelve teams are competing this year. Four European countries are taking part and the interest is centred on the two Iron Curtain teams entering for the first time.

In the next fortnight the riders will pass through thirty-one countries and more than two hundred towns, covering a total of fifteen hundred miles.

It's the richest amateur cycle race in the world with more than three thousand pounds in prizes.

Number 54, Hugh McGuire, twenty-four year old Scot. He was hot on the tail of one of the Czechoslovak team.

The first to finish at Nottingham Forest ground was one of the home team, Peter Chissan representing North Region.

He just managed to hold his lead from a polish rider Henryk Kowalski.

Kowalski at twenty eight, an experienced rider who's represented his country many times. He won the Tour of Poland in 1959.

Today the teams left the Council House at Nottingham - for Southend - a hundred and fifty three miles of hard riding.
