  • Description

The Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PDLFP) held a rally in a Beirut cinema on Sunday (22 February), to celebrate the seventh anniversary of the movement's formation.

The rally was addressed by the Front's Secretary-General, Mr. Nayef Hawatmeh, who told his supporters that Libya had expressed a willingness to act as host for a conference of Arab parties to discuss the possibility of creating a progressive Arab front. The original proposal for such a conference had been put forward by the PDLFP.

Mr. Hawatmeh also warned of a possible new round of factional fighting in Lebanon. He said that the "isolationists" (right-wingers) were preparing for more fighting, but they would be defeated by the left-wing groups.

He also criticised president Anwar Sadat of Egypt, and said there would be "popular outbreaks" against the Egyptian government. Mr. Hawatmeh said that the American plans for a Middle East settlement conflicted with Syria's refusal to conclude an agreement similar to Egypt's Sinai accord with Israel.

Mr. Hawatmeh also told the rally that King Hussein of Jordan was trying to revive a plan for a union between the east bank of Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West bank.

The leader of another radical organisation based in Lebanon, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), told another meeting on the same day that his group had meetings with the main Palestine guerrilla organisation, Fatah, whose leader also heads the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

The PFLP leader, Dr. George Habash, said that the they had told Fatah that despite their differences over the question of a settlement with Israel, they would be "in the same trench" with the Palestinian forces on crucial issues.

The PFLP is the main group among the "rejection front" organisations which oppose a political settlement of the Middle East crisis.
