  • Description

In Rome today (Friday) even the traffic police got presents as people celebrated the Christian festival of Epiphany.

Epiphany marks the day on which Christ is said to have manifested himself to the three wise men from the East, and it's always been a tradition in Italy to exchange presents at this time.

For children its a day of parties and processions, and stockings that contain either presents or a lump of coal, depending on how pleased mothers and fathers are with conduct over the past year.

With a motor car, a new tradition has grown up around Epiphany, the one day of the year when everyone is kind to the traffic police.

They still stand there in the busy streets controlling the traffic, but there's notable difference in their relationships with the motorists, who pull up to hand out their gifts.

Today, Epiphany also brought the first snow of the year in the capital, and the police carried their presents to nearby buildings to keep them dry.
