  • Description

The Vice-Premier of China, Keng Piao, met the Ghanaian Head of State, Lieutenant-General Fred Akuffo, on Wednesday (18 October) at the start of his five-day official visit to Ghana. Mr. Piao is on a tour of Africa, and met General Akuffo at the Ghanaian military leader's official residence, known as the Castle Osu, in the capital, Accra.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Piao's visit is the first by a leading Chinese politician since the late Chou En-lai visited Accra in 1964. General Akuffo's talks with Mr. Piao mark the revival of close ties between Ghana and China following the overthrow last July of the former Ghanaian military leader, General Ignatius Acheampong. Mr. Piao was scheduled to discuss trade and industry topics, notably the role of China in the development of Ghana's industry and agriculture. Chinese aid will be used to set up a ceramics factory, and a Ghanaian delegation is to visit China to study fishing techniques.

Three members of Ghana's ruling military council watched as Mr. Piao presented General Akuffo with a Chinese porcelain vase. The renewal of friendly relations with China is one major change in Ghanaian foreign policy since General Akuffo seized power.
