    CHAD CELEBRATED ITS FIFTH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE ON WEDNESDAY WITH A FOUR-HOUR PARADE THROUGH THE CAPITAL, FORT LAMY. THE SALUTE AT THE PARADE WAS TAKEN BY PRESIDENT FRANCOIS TOMBALBAYE OF CHAD, ACCOMPANIED BY PRESIDENT JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA OF THE NEIGHBOURING STATE, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC.

    CHAD GAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE ON NOVEMBER 28, 1961, BUT THE EVENT IS CELEBRATED ON JANUARY 11 BECAUSE IT IS TOO HOT IN NOVEMBER.

    AT WEDNESDAY'S PARADE, TROOPS AND VEHICLES TOOK FOUR HOURS TO PASS THROUGH FORT LAMY'S INDEPENDENCE SQUARE, WHILE AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD EMITTING MULTI-COLOURED SMOKE TRAILS.
