MHLANHLA: "We demand the ending of the banning and confinement order on Mrs. Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Mandela and many others. Never before has South Africa been faced with such mass activities of the entire oppressed population. Never before has the white minority, racist regime been so inflicted with a plague of lost confidence in its ability to sustain its oppressive machinery. The apartheid regime and the country as a whole is passing through a political crisis of unprecedented dimensions. There can only be one way out."

Background: South African Women's Day was celebrated in various parts of the World on Saturday (9 August). The date market the anniversary of a demonstration organised by the South African Women's Federation in 1956 against the extension of 'pass laws' to African women.

SYNOPSIS: Women's Day was officially ignored by the South African government but members of the banned African National Congress organised this rally in the Zambian capital, Lusaka. Representatives of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) also attended.

The recent United Nations Decade for Women Conference in Denmark called for greater efforts in support of South African Women. A demonstration was also held in London to mark the day. The main speaker at the Lusaka rally was the administrative secretary of the African National Congress, Joe Mhlanhla.
