  • Description

The President of Mali, Colonel Mousse Traore, officially opened a new Grand Mosque in the capital Bamako on Friday (30 July).

SYNOPSIS: Saudi Arabia met the full cost of the construction which was estimated at six million U.S. dollars. The building is an illustration of Saudi Arabia's ambitions to maintain the religious and moral values of Islam. the Imam of Islam's second Mosque in Saudi Arabia, Sheik Abdul Aziz Ben Salah also attended the ceremony, as well as several Mali government officials.

The Mosque is considered to be the most beautiful in Africa and has been built to reflect local architectural trends. Mali is renowned for Dogon architecture which has been developed by members of the Dogon tribe. Five hundred people were employed on the building, which covers an area of 12,500 square metres. President Traore cut the ribbon and Sheikh Abdul Ben Aziz Salah consecrated the mosque.

A service was held to mark the opening.

The following day, the mosque was used for regular services for the first time. Moslems were called to worship by the 166 loud speakers incorporated in the building and it also has two Minarets which are 45 metres high. More than 60 percent of Mali's population is Moslem and the religion is growing rapidly in other parts of Africa. From the time of the origin of Islam, social reform, through the enunciation of moral principles and actual legal enactments, formed part of the central core of Islamic teaching.

There are five obligatory duties under the religion and one of these is the worship of God in five daily prayers. These are made before sunrise, just after noon, in the late afternoon, immediately after the sunset and the last one about two hours later. All these prayers are public and collective and each service is led by an Imam.
