    SPEECH (TRANSCRIPT)
SHARON: "I have no doubt that our co-operation i the fields of security economic, cultural and so on, changed completely during the last year. And though the beginning was on the basis of security co-operation, or defence co-operation, I believe that in the future, the relations and co-operation in the fields, in the political field, in the economic and cultural, will be much stronger than those of the security and defence. Israeli policy, it is now, and it will be in the future, that our soldiers and officers will not interfere in any internal problems or struggles, or in any wars between different countries. We are willing to support, we are willing to train, we are willing to help and organisation, but our troops will never be involved in any wars, in any one war."

    Background: JERUSALEM

Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon flew back to Jerusalem on January 20 at the end of a four-day visit to Zaire where he signed agreements aimed at strengthening military co-operation between Israel and the central African state. Announcing the deal, Mr. Sharon told reporters it would preclude any Israeli involvement in wars on African soil. He said the agreement, under which Israeli advisers will restructure the 20,000-strong Zairean Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire restored diplomatic links with Israel last May. Most black African states broke off relations with Israel in the wake of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. General Sharon said he hoped other African countries would resume relations with his country.
