Background: The Italian government has pledged 85-million dollars (US) in aid to save the lives of some one million Third World children. The programme will be administered in conjunction with United Nations agencies and will run four years, 1982 - 1986. The money will be used to combat starvation in 15 developing countries. It will provide improved food and health care for children and their mothers. In Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Emilio Colombo has signed an agreement with UNESCO Director-General Amadou M'Bow. The agreement will facilitate the administration of the food programme and will create a permanent structure for UN-Italian projects. Italy is only the second nation, after Sweden, to have such a special relationship with UNESCO.
