Background: Thai troops were on full alert along the Kampuchean border on December 29, following a series of attacks by Vietnamese regulars on Kampuchean rebel bases. Although the Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF) have lost eight of their frontier camps within a month to fierce Vietnamese action, Western observers believe that the guerrillas will survive to challenge Hanoi's formidable military machine once again. Thailand has ordered its army to defend its sovereign territory if Vietnamese units cross the border-which they have done on several previous occasions. Vietnamese incursions have forced more than one hundred thousand Kampucheans into Thai territory, where several camps have been established to house the refugees. One of the largest of these is Red Hill, which uses an estimated two hundred tons (tonnes) of food each week to nourish the fifty-two thousand people sheltering there. Walter supplies are scarce, although dozens of trucks bring in as much of the daily need as possible. On December 30, fighting between KPNLF and Vietnamese forces along the Thai-Kampuchean frontier reached a new intensity, with heavy casualties reported on both sides. Civilians also suffered severely during the latest action. KPNLF spokesman announced late on December 30 that their forces pushed back Vietnam's attacking troops, and that parts of the Thai-Kampuchean frontier were again under Khmer control.
