  • Description

Although the Indonesian general election is still more than 12 weeks away, the many political parties are already hard at work making preparations.

At the Cabinet building in Djakarta on Wednesday, party leaders gathered to meet President Suharto. The meeting followed reports of threats and intimidation in connection with the election.

Last week there were reports from Java and Bali of mass defection by members of some political parties to the army-backed political group known as Sekber Golkar. Leaders of two parties have accused the army of forcing their members to quit in favour of joining the Sekber Golkar.

President Suharto appealed to all political groups to abide by the election rules and promised to take action against regional authorities found intimidating the people.

Afterwards he presented each party with an election campaign mobile unit equipped with loudspeakers and projectors. He also presented each leader with about 11,000 Sterling pounds for election purposes.

The election campaign officially begins on April 29. The election is scheduled to be held in early July.
