  • Description

THE WEATHER WAS THE ONLY VICTOR AT LORDS TODAY (TUESDAY). BY THE TIME RAIN BROUGHT THE GAME TO AN END THERE REMAINED ONLY 3 HOURS 10 MINUTES LEFT FOR PLAY AND A DRAW WAS ALMOST INEVITABLE. AT THE ENFORCED END OF THE GAME AUSTRALIA HAD A LEAD OF 98 WITH SIX WICKETS IN HAND, BATTING ON A PITCH GIVING NO HELP TO THE BEAM BOWLERS AND VERY LITTLE TO THE SPIN.

AT THE START OF THE DAY'S PLAY IT WAS UNLIKELY THAT ENGLAND COULD LOSE, A DRAW WAS THE MOST LIKELY RESULT, BUT THERE WAS A CHANCE OF AN ENGLAND VICTORY.

SINCE THE SEAM BOWLERS COULD HARDLY BEAT THE BAT, MANY WERE SURPRISED THAT DEXTER, THE ENGLAND CAPTAIN, SHOULD KEEP TRUMAN AND COLDWELL ON FOR EIGHTY MINUTES BEFORE TRYING A SPINNER. THE AUSTRALIANS HAD LOST GIFFORD ONLY FOR 49 RUNS AT THE START OF PLAY.

THE FIRST WICKET TO FALL WAS THAT OF O'NEILL. DEXTER HAD SET A FIELD HOPING THAT THE AUSTRALIAN MIGHT PLAY HIS FAMOUS HOOK SHOT DOWN TO SQUARE LEG OFF A SHORT BALL FROM TRUMAN. UP CAME THE SHORT BALL BUT O'NEILL MISS HIT IT AND IT FLEW INTO THE AIR AND THE SAFE HANDS OF PARFITT AT SHORT LEG.

BURGE JOINED REDPATH AND HIT A COLOURFUL 59 IN 100 MINUTES. THIS INCLUDED A TOWERING SIX OFF A LONG HOP FROM COLDWELL WHO WAS BEGINNING TO FLAG AFTER 90 MINUTES BOWLING. REDPATH MEANWHILE WAS ONLY HOLDING HIS END. HE SCORED ONLY SEVEN RUNS AFTER O'NEILL LEFT HIM, AND NONE AT ALL IN THE LAST 55 MINUTES OF HIS INNINGS. INEVITABLY HE WAS BARRACKED. EVENTUALLY HE REACTED AND TRIED TO SWEEP TITMUS TO THE BOUNDARY. HE MISSED THE BALL AND FELL LEG-BEFORE-WICKET.

SOON AFTER BURGE TRIED TO DRIVE TITMUS TO THE LONG-ON BOUNDARY AND, HAVING LOOKED VERY SAFE, WAS CAUGHT BY PARFITT AT SHORT MID-ON. THIS MADE THE SCORE 148 FOR FOUR AND VICE-CAPTAIN BOOTH JOINED SIMPSON, THE CAPTAIN, AT THE WICKET. IN THE HALF AN HOUR OF PLAY THAT REMAINED A FURTHER 20 RUNS WERE ADDED SO THE AUSTRALIAN TOTAL, WHEN RAIN STOPPED PLAY 10 MINUTES AFTER LUNCH, WAS 168.

THE TOTAL ATTENDANCE AT THE TEST WAS ESTIMATED AT 110,000 AND RECEIPTS AMOUNTED TO 254,516.
