  • Description

Italian professional sprint cycling ace Antonio Maspes created something of a stir in the cycle racing world by defeating France's Michel Rousseau in the final two-out-of-three matches to gain the World Championship title at Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium Aug 9.

Rousseau, former title-holder and favourite to win again, was second. Holland's Jan Derksen finished third.

A capacity crowd of 20,000 fans cheered themselves hoarse as champion and challenger hurled themselves around the circuit, jockeying for position during the 1,000 meter race. Maspes' time in the third sprint was 12.1 secs for the last 200 meters. A very fast time.

Maspes' compatriot, Valentino Gasparella, made it a 'double' for Italy by retaining his World Amateur Sprint title. He beat Italian Sante Gaiardoni in two straight matches.
