  • Description

In Santiago during the past week, and in other Chilean cities and towns as well, householders have experienced increasing difficulty in shopping for fruit and groceries. A worsening economic crisis in Chile, on Wednesday (10 Jan) brought about the introduction of food rationing which the government said was to "ensure that every Chilean family receives an adequate supply of basic consumer products". It also said the people would be "organised to combat speculation and black market-earning". The measures have been expected for some time because of mounting shortages of essential foodstuffs....particularly meat. Domestic production has not been able to cope with demand, and a lack of foreign exchange has prevented sufficient purchases from aborad. The rationing has come at a time when Chile has lost 500 million dollars (200 million sterling) over the past two years because of a dramatic fall in the price of copper....its main export....and a simultaneous 40 percent rise in the cost of imported foods. Chile depends on sales of copper for 70 percent of its income from abroad.

SYNOPSIS: Food rationing was introduced by the Chilean government on Wednesday in an effort to ensure that all families receive an adequate supply of consumer products.

In Santiago on Tuesday, householders were joining long queues to buy vegetables and groceries. Shopping has been particularly difficult for some time because domestic food production has not been able to cope with demand.

Rationing has come at a time when Chilean earnings have plunged 500 million dollars during the past two years because of a dramatic fall in the price of copper....its main export....and a simultaneous 40 percent rise in the cost of imported foods.

Finance Minister, Fernando Flores, has accused opponents of President Allende's regime of creating a black market to prepare the way for the government's fall.
