  • Description

The General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) Bishop Desmond Tutu was among black leaders who met visiting U.S civil rights campaigner Jesse Jackson on Monday (30 July) for talks on a unified approach to the struggle against apartheid. Throughout his stay in South Africa Mr. Jackson has been urging blacks to unite in non-violent opposition against the policy of racial separation. Many radical blacks reject Bishop Tutu's Christian approach to the problem of apartheid. But the Bishop continues to pursue a policy of conciliation rather then confrontation and feels this may now be bearing fruit as he outlined at a news conference on Monday at the end of a week-long meeting of SAAC.
