  • Description

WHEN WEST BERLINERS HANG A PICTURE, THEY DO IT IN A BIG WAY. OVER THE WEEKEND THEY UNVEILED THE WORLD'S LARGEST PAINTING, A WORK OF SKYSCRAPER PROPORTIONS, WHICH IS NOW HANGING ON THE SIDE OF THE EUROPA CENTRE IN WEST BERLIN'S MAIN BUSINESS AND SHOPPING CENTRE.

AFTER A YEAR'S WORK, ARTIST MICHAEL OSTWALD HAS CREATED A MAMMOTH PROTEST AGAINST WORLD VIOLENCE AND HUNGER.

HE CALLS HIS PAINTING THE SUFFERING MAN. IT DEPICTS A SKELETAL FIGURE OF GIANT PROPORTIONS -- ARMS RAISED IN A GESTURE OF DESPAIR AND ANGUISH -- STRIKINGLY COLOURED IN RED, YELLOW, GREEN AND BLACK.

THE PAINTING IS 239 FEET (73 METRES) LONG AND 39 FEET (12 METRES) WIDE. THE ARTIST ESTIMATES THAT HE USED ABOUT A MILLION BRUSH STROKES IN CREATING THE WORK.

WEST BERLIN NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS DONATED HUNDREDS OF FEET OF PAPER FOR THE PRELIMINARY SKETCHES. THE CANVAS FOR THE FINAL PAINTING WAS GIVEN BY LARGE WEST GERMAN CHEMICAL FIRM, AND WAS SPECIALLY FLOWN TO BERLIN BY THE UNITED STATES AIRFORCE.

A VOLUNTARY EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OF THE GERMAN CIVIL DEFENCE WAS CALLED IN TO HELP ERECT THE CANVAS THE CANVAS ON FRIDAY NIGHT. THE HANGING OPERATION LASTED THROUGH INTO THE EARLY HOURS OF SATURDAY MORNING.

DESPITE ALL THE EFFORT, THE GIANT PAINTING WILL BE ALLOWED TO HANG ON THE EUROPA CENTRE ONLY DURING THIS WEEKEND. SEVERAL OFFICES IN THE BUILDING HAVE INSISTED THAT IT BE REMOVED BEFORE MONDAY -- AS STAFF WOULD BE UNABLE TO WORK WITH THE PAINTING CUTTING OFF ALL DAYLIGHT.

NEVERTHELESS, HERR OSTWALD BELIEVES THAT HIS PICTURE WILL FULFIL ITS PURPOSE, AND SHOCK THE PUBLIC INTO THINKING ABOUT WORLD HUNGER AND MISERY.
