  • Description

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Doctor Kurt Waldheim, has said that any foreign intervention from whatever source was detrimental to the future of Angola and should be stopped immediately.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday (9 January), Doctor Waldheim said he would not exclude initiatives by certain Governments to solve the Angola crisis, but it would be detrimental to discuss other approaches while the Organisation of African Unity, meeting in Addis Ababa, was dealing with the problem.

On the question of the arms race, Doctor Waldheim expressed pessimism. He was concerned about the increased sales of arms. He said that in spite of efforts by several organisations, the world was still far away from complete disarmament.

But he said the world must continue to work to that end. "If it goes on the way it does now, I see grave danger for the future of mankind," he said.

SYNOPSIS: The United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, has said he expects that a growing tendency to recognise the political status of the Palestinians would be one of the main aspect of next week's Security Council debate on the Middle East. He said Israel's refusal to take part was not helpful.

Doctor Waldheim made these remarks at a news conference on Friday. He also talked about the war in Angola.
