  • Description

THE DUTCH PARLIAMENT WAS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) MEETING IN EMERGENCY SESSION AT THE REQUEST OF MEMBERS WHO WANT TO QUESTION MINISTERS ABOUT POLICE BEHAVIOUR IN AMSTERDAM, WHERE 30 PERSONS WERE INJURED YESTERDAY IN CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS. MEANWHILE, AMSTERDAM WAS SURVEYING THE PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE VIOLENCE.

THE RIOTS GREW OUT OF A PROTEST ON MONDAY NIGHT BY BUILDING WORKERS AGAINST A DEDUCTION OF TWO PER CENT OF THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAY BONUS FOR ADMINISTRATION COSTS. A 51-YEAR-OLD PLASTERER FELL DEAD DURING A CLASH WITH BATON-WELDING POLICE. THE WORKERS' CLAIM THAT HE WAS KNOCKED DOWN BY A POLICE CAR AND BEATEN UP BY TRUNCHEONS ADDED FIRE TO YESTERDAY'S VIOLENCE. POLICE, HOWEVER, SAID A POST-MORTEM SHOWED THE MAN HAD A SERIOUS HEART AILMENT AND DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES.

ON TUESDAY A PROTEST MARCH WAS ORGANISED. THE WORKERS MARCHED TO THE PREMISES OF DE TELEGRAF, WHICH THEY CLAIMED HAD NOT TRUTHFULLY REPORTED MONDAY NIGHT'S PROTEST. THEY BROKE WINDOWS IN THE BUILDING, SET FIRE TO DELIVERY VANS AND TRIED TO ENTER THE BUILDING.

IN THE EVENING, RIOTING BANDS OF DEMONSTRATORS THREW UP BARRICADES AGAINST POLICE CHARGES IN THE HEART OF THE CITY. THE BUILDING WORKERS WERE JOINED BY LONG-HAIRED YOUTHS WHO SMASHED STONE WINDOWS AND STONE TRAMS. EARLIER, POLICE HAD USED GUNS AND TEAR GAS TO SCATTER BUILDING WORKERS WHO RAMPAGED THROUGH THE CITY.
