  • Description

In the Khmer Republic, Communist-led insurgents are threatening the ferry town of Neak Luong the only government-held position along a vital 41-mile (66 kms) stretch of the Mekong River. By the weekend, the government forces had lost most of the west bank of the river. Troops were fighting less than 200 yards (metres) from the river bank as the last civilians were evacuated from their homes.

Government posts to the north, south and east of Neak Luong had already fallen to the insurgents.

Foreign humanitarian workers were evacuated from the town by light aircraft as the Khmer Rouge insurgents closed in.

Meanwhile in the capital, Phnom Penh, four people were killed and five injured when a 107 mm rocket landed in the city on Saturday (11 January). Most of the dead and injured were women and children out on the streets before the nightly curfew.

Parents carried away their dead children and the relatives of one dead woman wept hysterically beside her body in the street.

Observers have been surprised that so few rockets have fallen on the city, for the insurgents have approached close enough to keep the city under continual bombardment if they so desired.
